Homophobics/Homophobic Reporting Centre
Description
Homophobia is on the rise again…. Did it ever go away? Actually no, it never did go away completely but did die down. How do we know that it has increased again? Well let's take two separate Lesbian & Gay Prides this year alone for starters.

Birmingham Gay Pride: two gay men walking home after a nice relaxing day with others in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans (LGBT) Community as well as heterosexuals when they get beat up with one been hospitalised all because they are different? Brighton Gay Pride: Man runs into the sea to escape the police after attacking and robbing a gay man at Brighton Pride. A lot of homophobic hate crimes go unreported because the victims are scared to go to the police in case they get ignored/fobbed off.

I read with interest the other day in a gay magazine about a study on heterosexual homophobic guys. A professor showed four heterosexual homophobics some gay porn films and during these films all four guys had an erection and dilated pupils due to sexual excitement. All of these guys denied afterwards that they became sexually excited over watching gay porn films. This lead to the professor to conclude that homophobics are those who fear their own insecurity over their own sexuality. This is something that we here at The 'New' Birmingham and Midlands Lesbian & Gay switchboard have thought for a very long time.

We here have a Homophobic Reporting Centre where we take calls from the LGBT Community who have been victims of Homophobic hate crimes. We take details of where, when the crime took place, details of injuries suffered, details of attacker(s) etc and with the callers permission pass on to the police to investigate. If the perpetrator is caught and appears in court then one of the Directors here (Brynn-Dafydd Tudor) will represent the victim in court, assist the victim and hope to get a conviction. At the same time the victim receives counselling from our other Director (James-Morgan Tudor) and other help that may be required from any of our dedicated volunteers all of which is totally free.

This is the type of work we all do here amongst other types such as Welfare Benefit Advise, Housing Advice, Safe Sex Advice, Relationship Advice and much, much more and all totally free to the client. We do advise all our clients that if they wish to make a donation then they are most welcome to but we don't push for it, we don't force them to and only mention it once to the client.

We rely solely on donations, grants and sponsorship which all at present are extremely thin. Whilst we await money to arrive we are putting on shows and at present are preparing our Christmas Pantomime after not long finishing our summer show "Willkommen" in which Amy's Attic most generously provided us with a beautiful silk corset, a pair of fab black hot pants and a pair of expensive designer red laced top stockings all completely free to help us out in our show and also may be helping out with our Pantomime costumes if they have anything we may need.

If you wish to contact us here at The 'New' Birmingham and Midlands Lesbian & Gay Switchboard for anything at all then you can do so by a number of ways: Phone: 0121 603 2595, Fax: 0121 603 2595, Email: advice@nbamlgs.org.uk or by visiting our web site (which is undergoing major changes due to relocation) Please click here to visit us
